Atlanta Blaze News Release
ATLANTA - In a back-and-forth game most of Saturday night, the Denver Outlaws (2-1) came out on top 18-16 over the Atlanta Blaze (1-1) in front of an outstanding crowd at Grady Stadium.
Even in the loss, Spencer Ford saw plenty of bright spots out of his team, "Although the outcome was not the one we expected, there are positives we can take out of this one. Shayne Jackson had a breakout game. Alex Woodall got the better of one of the best in the world in his second game at the X."
Shayne Jackson came out on fire, scoring the first three goals for the Blaze to make it 3-1. Denver closed out the first quarter strong to tie it up 5-5 after 15 minutes.
Jackson continued his strong start into the second quarter, scoring his fourth and fifth goals. Jackson added a couple of assists to have a game-high seven points.
Alex Woodall got revenge in his rematch against Denver star Max Adler, winning 19 of 36 faceoffs. He also capped off a scoring run for the Blaze by scoring himself low and left against Denver netminder Dillon Ward, giving the Blaze a 10-7 lead. Denver would grab a goal late in the second quarter to make the score 10-8 Blaze at halftime.
Denver's halftime adjustments proved to be effective, as they limited Jackson to just one point in the second half and had six points in the first 7:02 of the second half to take a 14-13 lead.
After trailing 15-13 after three quarters, Atlanta fought back to tie it up at 15-15. After trading goals with the Outlaws, Denver's Zach Currier scored the eventual game-winner with 1:48 left. Denver would tack on another goal late and held possession late to run out the clock.
Tommy Palasek had two goals and four assists to get to six points. He and Jackson lead the league through Week 2 with eleven points. Defensively, Will Nowesnick had a game-high two caused turnovers. TJ Comizio played phenomenally on defense, securing three ground balls while scoring a goal on offense.
"When we built this team, we knew we would have ups and downs," said Ford. "We were then and still are very confident that we have the makings of a championship team. Each week we are seeing more players rise to the occasion."
