Blaze Comeback Falls Short at Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Indiana - The Bloomington Blaze, presented by Mid-Illini Credit Union, held the Evansville IceMen scoreless in the final two periods, but still dropped a 3-2 decision on Sunday at the Ford Center.

The IceMen scored two of their three first-period goals during special teams play. Todd Robinson scored a short-handed goal on a breakaway from a long pass started by a blocked shot 1:29 into the game, and John Ronan deflected home a Robinson wrist shot from the left wing on the power play 10:47 into the frame. Matt Pierce made it 3-0 when he walked in from the right point with 2:55 remaining.

Action turned physical in the second period with 31 minutes in penalties assessed, but the only goal in the middle frame was even-strength when Jason Dale took a bounce from the left wing and walked in for his third goal with 1:05 left to cut the IceMen lead to 3-1 at the second intermission.

Bloomington cut the deficit to 3-2 with Luke Popko's third goal on a feed from Jason Dale with 4:55 left in regulation. The Blaze emptied their net for an extra attacker in the final minute, but could not get the tying goal.

The Blaze fall to 3-12-2 as the IceMen move back into first place in the Turner Conference with a mark of 11-4-1. The Blaze outshot the IceMen 33-20. The Blaze were 1-for-8 on the power play, while the IceMen were 1-for-5 with the man advantage.

The Blaze return home for action on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Blaze host the Fort Wayne Komets at 7:05 p.m. on a Pepsi Date Night, when fans can bring a Pepsi product and get a second ticket free, and with the purchase of a combo meal, a second of equal or lesser value is free. On Saturday, fans are invited to bring a new stuffed animal to toss onto the ice after the first Blaze goal against the Tulsa Oilers in the annual Teddy Bear Toss to benefit Toys for Tots.
