Joplin Blasters News Release
Laredo, TX-The Blasters finished off a nine-game, eight-day road trip with a 2-1 loss Thursday night to Laredo at Uni-Trade Stadium in South Texas.
Joplin (23-14) split its series with the Lemurs after taking game three of the series 9-8 in 12 innings. That game was halted Wednesday night and concluded before the series finale on Thursday. The Blasters scored an unearned run in the top of the 12th and held Laredo scoreless in the bottom half for the victory. Joplin went 6-3 on the road trip and sits two-and-a-half games in front of Laredo for first place in the South Division of the American Association.
Laredo (22-18) struck first in the series finale. The Lemurs plated two first inning runs after D'Vontrey Richardson and Abel Nieves both singled. The first run scored following a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Kevin Taylor. An RBI single from Denis Phipps made it 2-0 as Nieves scored.
The Blasters only mustered a single mark in the third. Oscar Mesa led off the inning with a line drive single to left-center. After a strikeout, Carlos Ramirez brought Mesa home on a sacrifice fly to deep left that was caught near the warning track.
On the mound, Scott Garner posted the win for Laredo. Garner (5-2) lasted seven innings and gave up the one unearned run on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Jake Meiers took the loss for Joplin. Meiers (1-2) worked six innings and yielded two earned runs on six hits with one strikeout and no walks. Ryan Beckman posted his first save of the season as he pitched two innings and struck out two.
At the plate, Joplin and Laredo each had seven hits. Oscar Mesa and Omar Luna both had two hits in defeat. For the Lemurs, D'Vontrey Richardson and Denis Phipps each had two base hits. The Blasters left seven men stranded, and each side committed an error in the contest.
