Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Kitsap: August 1, 2011: The pitching of Jeff Gold (University of Oregon) has been the gold standard for the Cowlitz Black Bears and among the best starting pitchers in the West Coast League.
His latest victim is the Kitsap BlueJackets, who had five hits and left five on base as Gold didn't allow a walk. He allowed three hits in the first three innings, but went on a tear in the middle of the game in which he retired 12 consecutive BlueJackets. Gold didn't record a strikeout until the 5th inning, but finished with seven to finish the game.
The Black Bear offense gave Gold the bare minimum lead on an RBI double by Spencer O'Neil (University of Oregon) in the fifth frame. Cowlitz would add an insurance run in the 9th, when an intentional walk to Braxton Miller (Lewis-Clark St.) loaded the bases and a passed ball scored Kevin Schwartz (Pacific University) from third.
The team returns to Story Field tomorrow for the start of four home games with a contest with the WCL Portland All-Stars. Don't miss Azteca $2 Tuesday, where beer, hot dogs, GA tickets, and soda are all just $2. It will also be Longview Schools Honor Roll Night. After that, the Walla Walla Sweets come to Story Field for a weekend series beginning August 5th with Las Rocas Fabulous Friday and Bark In The Park. The first 100 fans will receive a Black Bears dog bowl courtesy of Pet Works. On August 6th its Black Bears t-shirt giveaway courtesy of Dick Hannah Toyota.
