Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Longview-Kelso, Washington, Tuesday, April 10, 2012: The Cowlitz Black Bears have signed two University of California Riverside freshman pitchers. Kevin Sprague and Cody Rogina, both southpaws, will join the club for the 2012 season and are expected to have an immediate impact.
Sprague, 6-3, 180 lbs., starred at Chino Hills (CA.) High School. Kevin was named Chino Hills High Male Athlete of the year, All-League First Team and First Team All-Inland Valley in 2011. On the mound, he led Chino Hills to the league Championship in 2011, and set a record for innings pitched and wins. Off the field, Kevin was named Academic All-League, graduated at the top 10% of his class, and volunteered his time to the community with youth baseball camps.
"We're excited to have Kevin Sprague on the Black Bears' roster," said Black Bears General Manager Grant Wilson. "Former Black Bears Head Coach Bryson LeBlanc, now an assistant at UC Riverside, is very high on Kevin, and we believe he will be a standout pitcher this summer in the West Coast League."
Cody Rogina, 5-10, 190 lbs., was a two-sport star at Los Osos (CA.) High School, and was named All-CIF in football as a junior. "Cody has a football mentality, with a chance to help the Black Bears immediately," said Black Bears head coach Tim Matz.
