Kitsap, June 7, 2011: The 2-0 (0-0) Cowlitz Black Bears kicked off their 2011 league season at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds against the Blue Jackets. The Blue Jackets 1-2 (1-2) had opened WCL play previously on the road, but hosted the Black Bears for their home opener.
Both teams' pitching staffs turned in stellar performances. For Cowlitz, starter Grahamm Weist (Cal St. Fullerton) pitched five innings, giving up one run on five hits with two strikeouts and no walks. For the hosts, Colin Feldman tossed six innings of two-run ball while striking out five (all looking) and surrendering no walks.
The Black Bears struck in the 5th inning, when Braxton Miller (Lewis-Clark State) followed back-to-back singles by Derek Atkinson (Clackamas CC) and Cody Webster (Cal St Fullerton) with a two-RBI double. The team advanced to scoring position on five other occasions, but could not bring the runners in.
The Cowlitz Black Bears square off in game two of their three game series against the Kitsap Blue Jackets tomorrow, Wednesday, June 8th, at 6:35 pm.
The Black Bears league home opener will be Friday, June 10th, at 6:35 pm against the Walla Walla Sweets. It will be another 'Las Rocas Fabulous Friday' along with Budweiser Can Koozie Night where the first 100 adults will receive a can Koozie. After the game, it's Play Catch With Dad on the field.
