Black Bears Drop 4th Straight
July 9, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Longview-Kelso: Despite losing the previous three games to Wenatchee, the Black Bears managed 31 hits against the WCL-leading AppleSox. That offensive production went missing in the first game against the expansion Klamath Falls Gems. Klamath Falls shut the Cowlitz offense down to the tune of four hits as part of a 3-0 defeat.
The game was a pitcher's duel, with Stuart Fewel (LCC) showing much the same form he had when he recorded a three-hit shutout in Bellingham. He was efficient, averaging just over ten pitches per inning through the 7th inning. Fewel ran into trouble in the 8th when his outfielders missed diving catches, which turned into a double and a triple as part of a three-run Gems inning.
Cody Webster (Cal St. Fullerton) went two-for-three and Greg Velazquez (Cal St. Fullerton) reached base on a pair of walks, but that was it for most of the Black Bears offense as no other player reached base more than once.
The teams will face off again tomorrow at 6:35 from Story Field as part of a four-game home stand for the Black Bears. Be sure to be there for the Riverview Community Bank Dash For Cash Extravaganza, where children 12 and under race around the field picking up dollar bills. It's also another Applebee's Saturday at the Park, with coupons given away all night long.
