SAN JOSE (March 18, 2003) – San Jose CyberRays general manager Marlene Bjornsrud will moderate a forum on Title IX – the federal law guaranteeing girls and women equal opportunity in scholastic and collegiate educational programs, including sports – from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday in the Community Room at San Jose City College.

The discussion, which will feature Bay Area women prominent in sports, is free and open to the public and sponsored by the American Association of University Women – San Jose Branch.

A federal panel recently completed a review of Title IX's applicability to sports programs and recommended changes that many women believe will substantially weaken the law, prompting the AAUW's to host the event. Two members of the panel, professional soccer player Julie Foudy of the San Diego Spirit and former Olympic swimmer Donna de Varona, refused to sign the panel's report and instead submitted a minority report faulting the review process.

Bjornsrud, a former college athletic administrator and the only woman in charge of a Bay Area professional sports franchise, wrote a guest column Feb. 24 in the San Jose Mercury News saying the real purpose of the federal review was to weaken a law ``that has created even more benefits than its supporters originally envisioned.''

On the panel with Bjornsrud will be Barbara Beard, commissioner of the Blossom Valley Athletic League; Anne Cribbs of the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee; Carolyn Lewis, senior associate athletic director at San Jose State; Pati Ruiz, Santa Clara tennis player; and Janice Richard, San Jose State women's basketball coach.
