Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY - Jim Magrane combined with two relievers on a five-hit shutout as the Montgomery Biscuits (36-32) eked out a 1-0 victory over the Mobile BayBears (26-42) on Friday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
It was the Biscuits' first 1-0 victory since a home game against the Huntsville Stars on July 7, 2004.
Jeremy Owens provided the game's sole offense with a two-out RBI single off of losing pitcher John Hudgins (3-3) in the fifth inning. His groundball up the middle barely eluded a dive from Mobile shortstop Juan Ciriaco, bringing home Matthew Maniscalco.
Magrane (8-5) walked three batters in the first three innings, pitching in and out of trouble, before bearing down to retire six of the last seven batters he faced. The lone exception was Brett Dowdy, caught stealing to end the seventh inning.
The veteran righthander tied a season-high with seven strikeouts. He becomes the second pitcher in the Southern League to reach eight victories, joining Chattanooga's Steven Kelly.
Relievers Brian Henderson and Jean Machi finished off the BayBears the rest of the way, with Henderson setting down the side in order in the eighth and Machi pitching around a two-out walk in the ninth for his fifth save in seven chances.
The finale of the five-game series, closing out the first half of Southern League play, will be held at 7:05 pm on Friday night at Riverwalk Stadium. Jason Cromer (0-1, 1.27) will take the mound for Montgomery against Mobile's Jose Oyervidez (2-5, 3.76). A MAX Fireworks Spectacular will follow the game's conclusion.
