Montgomery Biscuits News Release
KODAK, Ten. - The Biscuits (35-31) out-hit the Tennessee Smokies (34-32) 15-7, but couldn't cash-in in some key moments stranding 13 men on-base in their 6-4 loss in game one of their five-game series on Wednesday night at Smokies Stadium.
J.D. Martin (4-8) got the start for the Butter and Blue, and looked sharp in the first, striking out the first two batters he faced. But in the second, Ian Rice singled to start the inning before Trent Giambrone knocked the catcher in on an RBI-triple to make it 1-0 Smokies. A Martin wild pitch brought home Giambrone to make it 2-0, and then an RBI-double by Trey Martin made it 3-0 at the end of two.
Peter Maris pulled one back for the Biscuits in the third with a solo home run over the right field wall. The infielder has now homered in two-straight games for Montgomery. Nick Solak also slashed an RBI-single to make it a 3-2 game in the third.
Tennessee responded in the bottom of the third with a two-run bomb by Giambrone over the left field fence, and then got an RBI-single from Charcer Burks in the fourth to put the Smokies up four at 6-2.
In the top of the fifth, the Biscuits had two on and two out for Dalton Kelly who rolled a groundball up the middle that deflected off the second base bag and trickled into center field to score both runs, which proved to be the last two of the game.
Oscar De La Cruz went 4.2 innings in a no-decision, and the Smokies bullpen tossed 4.1 scoreless innings in what was a win for Scott Effross (2-4). The Biscuits had the bases loaded in the seventh, but couldn't scratch across a run, and then had runners at second and third with two outs in the ninth for pinch hitter Brett Sullivan, but Smokies closer Craig Brooks got him swinging to end the game.
The Biscuits will try to rebound and keep their playoff hopes alive with a victory on Thursday when Genesis Cabrera (5-4) battles with Michael Rucker (5-4) at 6:00 PM CT.
The Biscuits will return to Riverwalk Stadium to open the second half of the season in a six-game series against the Birmingham Barons on Thursday, June 21 when it will be Tank Top and Flip Flop Night featuring a Tank Top Giveaway. The home stand will also feature a special VIP meet and greet with Flavor Flav and '90s Night and MAX Fireworks on Friday, June 22, Family Faith Night with Faith Radio Pre-game Concert and MAX Fireworks on Saturday, June 23, and the 25th Anniversary of The Sandlot celebration and Youth Jersey Giveaway on Sunday, June 24.
