Sevierville, TN- Jace Brewer went 6-for-6 while Brian Martin homered twice and drove in 5 runs as Montgomery (38-58, 9-17) topped Tennessee 18-6 Thursday night to split the four game series.
The Smokies allowed a season high in hits (24) and runs in the lopsided loss.
Smokies starter Mike Wodnicki (0-1) struggled in his first start since being called up from Palm Beach. Wodnicki allowed four runs in the second inning on a Martin home run, an RBI single to Dan Massiate, and a two run homer by Brewer. Martin's home run was the first of two for the Montgomery first baseman, who went yard against Wodnicki again in the third. Eric Reece also hit a two-run third inning shot as Montgomery built a 7-1 lead.
Leading 10-6, the Biscuits sent 13 men to the plate and scored eight runs in the eighth inning to cap the scoring. Tennessee second baseman Chad Ehrnsberger pitched the final 1 1/3 innings.
Papo Bolivar and Nate Espy each homered for Tennessee (50-46, 11-15) in the loss.
The Smokies hit the road for an eight game trip to Greenville and Mobile beginning Friday night in South Carolina. RHP Jeremy Cook (5-3, 4.54) will start against RHP Zach Miner (5-8, 5.88) in the first game of the Greenville series Friday.
