Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
ZEBULON, N.C. - The Delmarva Shorebirds offense couldn't muster anything late as the Carolina Mudcats scored eight unanswered runs, handing the Shorebirds a 10-2 loss on Saturday night at Five County Stadium.
The Shorebirds (28-57, 7-13) will now have to pick up a win in the series finale on Sunday against the Mudcats (43-43, 9-11) to earn a series split.
Carolina got to work straight away in the bottom of the first. Jeferson Quero walked with one away before scoring on a Oswal Leones groundball that coaxed a throwing error. Hedbert Perez then singled home Leones to make it 2-0 Mudcats.
The Shorebirds responded immediately in the top of the second. Isaac De Leon singled to start the inning and Trendon Craig then singled him to third. A balk scored De Leon and moved Craig to third, before Roberto Martinez laced a double into the rightfield corner to tie the game at 2-2.
The Mudcats responded in kind with a run in the bottom of the third to reclaim the lead. With two on and two out, Quero came through with an RBI single to stake Carolina to a 3-2 lead.
Carolina loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth on two singles and a hit batter before a Leones groundball double play plated a run to make it 4-2.
The Shorebirds had an opportunity to get back into the game in the eighth as Noelberth Romero singled and Elio Prado walked to start the inning. A fielder's choice put men at first and third, and after a strikeout, Frederick Bencosme was thrown out at second trying to steal to end the inning.
The Mudcats took that momentum from a shutdown frame and blasted the contest open. Mendez picked up another RBI with a double and Quero followed with a two-run double before Leones singled him home. Eduardo Garcia capped the frame with a two-run homer, his ninth of the season, to make it 10-2.
Alexander Cornielle (5-7) picked up the win for Carolina with six strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four without issuing a walk.
Juan De Los Santos (2-8) suffered the loss for Delmarva, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks without striking out a hitter.
The Shorebirds wrap their six-game series with the Carolina Mudcats on Sunday, July 17 at Five County Stadium. The Shorebirds hand the ball to Conor Grady (4-6, 6.05) while the Mudcats counter with Miguel Segura (2-2, 4.21). First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 12:45 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
