Tulsa Drillers News Release
The weather held off and permitted baseball to be played in Tulsa on Thursday night. But in a proverbial sense for the Drillers, when it rains, it pours. After five shutout innings from both Dan Houston and Brandon Hynick, the Arkansas Travelers got the scoring started in a big way, putting up seven runs in the sixth to take a commanding lead, before cruising to a 7-3 victory at ONEOK Field.
Taylor Lindsey highlighted Arkansas' sixth-inning outburst with a three-run homer. It continued a good series for the Travs' second baseman. Lindsey is 5-9 with five RBI in the first two games of a four-game set.
A night after facing ex-Driller Jarrett Grube, Tulsa fell to another former teammate in Hynick. The Travelers' right-hander, who spent 2008 and part of last season with Tulsa, allowed just one run on six hits over seven solid innings to pick up his second win of the season.
Houston suffered his third loss of the season for Tulsa. After breezing through his first five innings, the wheels fell off in the sixth, as Arkansas touched him for six runs (four earned) on five hits.
Matt Long led off the fateful sixth with a double into the right field corner, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Houston was able to strike out first baseman C.J. Cron before designated hitter Robbie Widlansky dropped a soft fly ball into center field to score Long with the game's first run.
After Randal Grichuk reached on a fielding error by Houston, Caleb Kowert shot a double into the left-center field gap to score Widlansky and setup Lindsey's three-run shot. And the Travs weren't done.
With two on and two out, the man who began Arkansas' big ending, Matt Long, capped it off with his third double of the game, plating both runners and putting the Travelers up 7-0.
Tulsa got a run back in the bottom of the sixth. Delta Cleary Jr. got the inning started with double and advanced to third on Cristhian Adames' unsuccessful drag bunt attempt. Kent Matthes followed with an RBI single to left to get the Drillers on the board.
In the bottom of the eighth, Kyle Parker capped off the scoring with a two-run home run. With Cleary Jr. aboard, the Clemson product cleared the bullpen in the right field with his seventh homer of the year to make it 7-3.
The Drillers and Travelers will take Friday off as the first game of the Bedlam Series will be played at ONEOK Field. Tulsa and Arkansas will play game three of their four-game series Saturday evening with Chad Bettis (2-2, 4.06 ERA) and Arkansas' Matt Oye (3-2, 5.60 ERA) the scheduled starters. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM.
Fans who are unable to make it out to the ballpark can follow the game on AM1430, The Buzz in Tulsa. The broadcast will also be available at TulsaDrillers.com, or through the I Heart Radio app or website.
