Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Lexington, KY - For the second straight day, the Augusta GreenJackets blew two separate leads - failing to hold leads of 2-0 and 3-2 before falling by a 4-3 score in ten innings to the Lexington Legends on Memorial Day in Kentucky.
With the GreenJackets leading 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Legends put runners at second and third with a pair of hits off Derek Law to lead off the frame. Justin Gomisky's RBI groundout put the Legends on the board and pushed the tying run to third base. Jimmy Howick followed with a groundball to second baseman Jose Cuevas, who stopped the ball with a diving play. He rose to his feet and threw home, but not in time to retire Chris Epps and the Legends tied the game at two.
The GreenJackets didn't take long to claim their second lead of the night, as back-to-back doubles by Joe Staley and Garrett Buechele put Augusta back on top by a 3-2 score. Law was touched up again in the ninth inning though as Lexington tied the game once more with one out in the ninth on Matt Duffy's ninth home run of the year - a solo shot that eventually sent the game to extras.
After the GreenJackets went in order in the tenth, the Legends opened their half of the inning with back-to-back singles off DeMondre Arnold (4-1). A sacrifice bunt put both runners in scoring position and after Delino DeShields was intentionally walked to load the bases, Jordan Scott's bloop single to right-center won the game for the Legends.
The late drama took away the attention that should've been heaped on Joseph Biagini, who turned in his finest outing of the year for the GreenJackets. In seven scoreless innings, Biagini allowed only two hits and a pair of walks while striking out four. The Legends didn't get a runner past first against Biagini in his seven innings.
Augusta handed Biagini a 2-0 lead on Mark Minicozzi's sacrifice fly in the first and Brett Krill's RBI single in the sixth.
The GreenJackets hadn't lost a game they'd lead into the ninth inning until their last two and have now lost three in a row.
Clayton Blackburn (1-2, 4.26) takes the ball for the GreenJackets on Tuesday with hopes of ending Augusta's three-game losing skid. He'll face righty Mike Foltynewicz (6-1, 2.40) of the Legends. First pitch from Lexington comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home on Tuesday June 5th to open a three-game series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
