Bend pounds out 9 runs on 11 hits, defeat Wenatchee 9-4

Bend, OR - Bend was the first to strike in the bottom of the 2nd inning, Cullen O'Dwyer had a 1 out double, and came around to score after Turner Gill hit a ball to Wenatchee 2nd baseman Andre Real as Bend took the early 1-0 lead.

Wenatchee (23-20) responded with 2 runs in the top of the 3rd inning against Elks starter Martin Brown as Eric Huting and Brett Stephens singled to open up the inning, Grant Palmer brought in a run with an RBI groundout and Connor Spencer with an RBI double to give the AppleSox the 2-1 lead.

Bend (24-16) responded by tallying runs in back to back innings, as Seth Spivey opened up the 3rd with a single and would come around to score on an RBI groundout from Gill to tie the ballgame, and in the 4th Landon Cray singled to open up the frame and came around to score on Spivey's groundball that was mishandled by Real, who committed 3 errors in the ballgame, giving the Elks a 3-2 lead.

But the AppleSox would not go away quietly as they came back to tie the game in the top of the 6th inning as Real doubled to open up the inning and came around to score on the RBI single from Oregon State Beaver Joey Jansen to tie the game at 3.

Bend would come back and take the lead in the bottom of the 7th as Chase Fields singled to open up the inning, Keach Ballard dropped down a sacrifice bunt, and Seth Spivey singled to give Bend the 4-3 lead, but Bend wasn't done there. After Spivey, Tyler Servais drew a walk and Derek Dixon singled to load the bases. After Cullen O'Dwyer struck out for out number 2, Turner Gill and Grant Newton drew a pair of bases loaded walks and the Elks had a 6-3 lead through 7 innings.

The Elks were not done there, adding to the scoreboard in the bottom of the 8th as Chase Fields was hit by a pitch, Keach Ballard followed with an RBI triple down the right field line, after Tyler Servais drew a walk, Cullen O'Dwyer with an RBI single to score Ballard, Turner Gill reached on an error that scored pinch runner Austin Guzzon, as the Elks sent all 9 hitters to the plate in the 7th and 8th innings, giving the Elks the 9-3 lead.

The AppleSox did put together a rally in the top of the 9th as Eric Hutting and Brett Stephens singled and doubled with 1 out to open up the inning, Joe Mello followed with an RBI single to put runners at the corners with 1 out, but Tanner Ring induced a 4-6-3 double play from Grant Palmer to end the game and send the Elks off with a 9-4 victory.

The Elks will have 2 chances to secure a series win over the Wenatchee AppleSox, game 2 on Sunday, first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
