Bend Elks News Release
Bellingham, WA - Zach Close's 2 run home run in the top of the 5th inning was the lone bright spot for the Bend Elks on Friday night as Bend had only 3 hits against the Bells, falling to Bellingham 9-3.
Bend (28-18) scored first in the top of the 3rd inning against Bells pitcher Andrew Olson (3-2) as Landon Cray singled and came around to score on the Sacrifice fly from Jordan Aboites, and the Elks lead 1-0.
But Bellingham took over from there as they sent all 9 hitters to the plate, tallying 5 runs on 4 hits, the big blows in the inning being the 2 run double from Alex Calbick and the 2 run single from Ryan Kirby, and Bellingham lead 5-1.
The Bells tacked on another run in the 4th inning against as Christopher Beall lead off against Elks starter Phil DiLandro with a solo home run, and Bellingham lead 6-1. That brought in Collin Nilson to reliever, and he had an effective outing, going 5 innings, giving up 3 runs, 2 earned, on 5 hits while striking out 4.
The Elks pulled within 3 in the top of the 5th inning as Curtis Wildung reached on an error and Zach Close hit first home run of the summer, a 2 run shot over the left field wall, and Bend trailed 6-3 after 5.
However, that is all the Elks would manage in the game as Olson pitched 7 strong innings to earn the win for the Bells, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits while striking out 8 to earn his 3rd win of the summer for the Bells.
The Elks and Bells will play game 2 of their 3 game series Saturday, first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
