Bells Walk-Off with Win over Kelowna Falcons

June 22, 2013 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bellingham Bells News Release

Alex Calbick would contribute four hits for the Bellingham Bells in their matchup with the Kelowna Falcons on Friday night, including a walk-off single, to give the Bells a 7-6 win in the series opener.

In total, Calbick would tally four RBI's on the night to help a resurgence of sorts for the Bells hitting.

Ryan Yamane would also total four hits on the night, while scoring two runs for Bellingham.

After an early offensive show by the Bells bats against Kelowna starter Michael Frericks where they scored six runs, the hitters would struggle against Falcons reliever Josh Spence. Against Spence, Bellingham would tally only three hits in six innings off of the left hander from Sydney, Australia.

Even with the early success, you can never have enough runs, "I thought the way we started that we would have a big hitting night," Bells manager Gary Hatch said. "But it was still early and even with six runs in the first two innings there is still a long way to go."

Heading into the ninth inning, Falcons manager Geoff White would pull Spence and insert right hander Nolan Savage. The inning would not start well for the Bells, as pinch hitter Nate Anderson would strike out looking. The next batter, Johnny Farrington, would then work a walk on a full count. Farrington would use his speed to steal second with Johnny Sewald at the plate. Following the Farrington walk and steal, Sewald would also work a full count walk against Savage.

With runners on first and second base for the Bells, White would again go to his bullpen. This time, the Falcons would send right hander Cody Lahman to the mound. The first batter to face Lahman, Ryan Yamane, would earn an infield single to load the bases for Calbick, who for the fourth time on the night would contribute a hit for the Bells. This time, Calbick's base hit would score Farrington to send the home crowd of 1,304 at Joe Martin Field home happy.

Prior to the game, Mike Connolly of the Bells would throw out the first pitch, as earlier in the day the University of Maine prospect would sign a professional contract with the San Francisco Giants. The versatile Connolly will be heading to the Giants minor league system as a pitcher.

Also from the University of Maine, Bells starter Luke Morrill would start off his outing by tossing four innings of no-hit baseball, prior to yielding three runs in the fifth inning. On the night, Morrill would go six innings for the Bells, only allowing the three runs in the fifth inning.

When asked about his trio of players from Maine (Calbick, Morrill, and Connolly), Hatch expressed how crucial they will be to the success of the team, "I'm thrilled that we could get them all the way over here across the country, they will definitely be critical pieces if we are to win the division."
