Bells Fall to Cowlitz
July 6, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bellingham Bells News Release
The Bells lost to the Cowlitz Black Bears 2-1 on Tuesday night. The Bells struck first tonight with a run in the first inning. Some early control problems from the Cowlitz starter allowed the Bells to load the bases with 2 walks and a single to left. David Banuelos then stepped up and delivered a sac fly to deep right field that nearly left the yard. And the Bells had the lead at 1-0.
Cowlitz finally came back and took the lead in the top of the 8th. The inning started ominously when Erek Bolton was hit by a pitch. After a sac fly advanced the runner to second, Michael Forgione stepped up and ripped a single to left, giving the Bears runners on the corners and one out. A chopper to first base off of the bat of Morgan McCullough allowed all of the runners to advance including the runner scoring from third, tying the game at 1-1. Andy Armstrong then hit a groundball to short stop that looked like it could have been a double play, but after the out at second was recorded the second baseman threw the ball past the first baseman allowing another run to score and giving the Bears a lead they would not relinquish at 2-1.
In the bottom of the ninth the Bells were able to get a couple of runners on base, but were unable to push them across.
The Bells pitchers were once again great tonight. Spencer Howard started for the Bells and went 3 innings allowing 0 runs on 2 hits and striking out 3. Keaton Kneuppel then came in and threw 2 innings giving up 0 runs on 1 hit and striking out 2. Jeff Gelinas tossed the next 2 innings and was perfect while striking out one batter. Josh Zavisubin pitched the final 2 innings and was the tough luck loser on the night. He threw well only allowing 2 hits and one earned run but was unlucky at the end of the day giving up the unearned run that sealed the Bells fate on the evening.
The Bells take the field again on Thursday July 7th for their first game of a three game series against the Kitsap BlueJackets at 7:05. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:35 on http://network1sports.com/station/bellinghambells with Tom Prizeman. To purchase tickets visit http://bellinghambells.com/home/ or call (367) 527-1035.
