Bells Fall to Bend
June 27, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bellingham Bells News Release
The Bend Elks defeated the Bellingham Bells 8-2 Sunday at Vince Genna Stadium.
The Elks scored four runs in the first inning and three runs in third frame to stun the Bells.
After Bend crossed seven runs in the first three innings, Bellingham responded in the top half of the fourth. Elijah Skipps lifted a long fly ball to left field that caromed off the foul pole for the Bells' first run of the day and the future Cal Poly Mustang's second homerun of the summer. Bend led 7-1 after three and half innings.
Bellingham capped the scoring in the ninth. Trailing 8-1, Austin Shenton started the rally with a single. Following a Matt DiLeo strikeout, Shane Hanon ripped a single to put runners on first and second. Andru Cardenas drove in Shenton, slapping a single into centerfield. But the rally ended abruptly when Chase Strumpf hit into a double play. The Bells crossed one run in the ninth but still fell 8-2 to Bend.
John Olsen (0-2) earned his second start of the season, and the UCLA product tossed five innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits to fall to 0-2 on the summer. Hunter Haworth fired two innings allowing only one run to score while fanning two Bend batters. Gonzaga Bulldog Sam Hellinger worked a scoreless eighth inning for Bellingham.
Nick Hunter (1-0) dealt seven innings for the Elks, allowing one run on five hits to earn his first victory of the 2016 campaign.
The Bells take the field Monday night against the Corvallis Knights, first pitch scheduled for 6:40, with pre-game coverage starting at 6:15 with Tom Prizeman on https://network1sports.com/station/bellinghambells.
