Bells Bounce Back to Beat Pippins

The Bells bounced back for the series win Thursday night taking down the Pippins 4-2.

The Bells got a great start from Joey Matulovich who went 5 innings allowing 1 run on no hits and striking out 7 on 85 pitches, that would lay the foundation for Henry Stellwagen to pitch the 6th and 7th where he allowed 1 run on 2 hits and struck out two.

The Pippins got the scoring started in the 1st, Jace VanDeBrake got things started with a leadoff walk and immediately advanced to second base on an error by the first baseman on a pick-off attempt. He then advanced to third on a wild pitch and after a walk from Jay Schuyler, VanDeBrake scored on a groundout to first by Freddy Smith to give the Pippins the early lead at 1-0.

The Bells would strike back for three of their own to take the lead in the 5th. Austin Shenton started things off by lining a single to right, and Matt Ruff followed with a single of his own and the Bells had runners on first and second. Shane Hanon then dropped a beautiful bunt down the third base line for a hit, and the third baseman threw the ball down the right field line allowing Shenton to score from second while giving everyone else an extra base. But Hanon would try take third as well and got Ruff caught in a run down that resulted in the first out. With Hanon now on third and one out Andru Cardenas ripped an RBI double to left center and the Bells led 2-1. After a wild pitch Gunnar Schubert hit a liner to center for a sacrifice fly and the score was 3-1 Bells at the end of 5.

The Pippins would get another run in the seventh. After the first two batters were retired Michael Filia drew a walk and stole second. Cameron Haskell then lined a RBI single into left to score Filia from second and make the score 3-2 Bells.

The Bells would then counter with their own run in the bottom of the inning. With two outs Andru Cardenas reached on a bunt single to get things started. Shortstop Gunnar Schubert then stepped up and hit a long double to right center to score Cardenas from first, but Schubert was caught at third by a nice relay from the Pippins to end the inning, but it would be all the Bells would need to close out the Pippins.

Hunter Haworth would come in for the Bells in the eighth and set down the Pippins 1-2-3 to pick up the hold. Sam Hellinger then entered in the ninth and closed it out for the Bells with a 1-2-3 inning of his own striking out the final two batters to slam the door.

The Bells take the field again tomorrow Friday June 24th for their first game of a three game set in Bend against the Elks at 6:35. Pregame starts at 6:05 on 930 AM KBAI with Tom Prizeman.
