Alabama Steeldogs News Release

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. - Alabama Steeldogs wide receiver Herman Bell broke the af2 and Steeldogs' single-game records for kickoff return yards against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers on Saturday.

Bell returned 12 kicks for 286 yards and a score in the contest, surpassing the previous record set by Shadrick McAfee (2003) by 18 yards. He destroyed the old Steeldogs' return record by 82 yards set in 2005 by Detronn Harris.

"Herman has given us a spark on special teams and offense this season," Steeldogs head coach Ron Selesky said. "He's a dangerous threat to score every time he touches the football."

In addition to his return yards, Bell caught five balls for 54 yards and a score - earning him the game's U.S. Army IronMan of the Game Award.

The five-year af2 and AFL veteran is averaging 18.5 yards per kick return and has amassed 633 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns in only four games. Bell is averaging 158.2 all-purpose yards per game for the Steeldogs.

Bell ranks fourth all-time in career kickoff returns for TDs with six. In addition, the 5-foot-8-inch, 180-pound Jacksonville State graduate now places third all-time for career kickoff return yards as a Steeldog with 1,141.

In addition to his two stints with the Steeldogs, Bell has spent time with two AFL teams. Bell has played for the Detroit Fury and Las Vegas Gladiators.

Bell's standout year came in 2003 with the Fury, when he caught 44 passes for 445 yards and 10 TDs on offense and finished with 34 total tackles on defense.
