Burlington Bees News Release
BELOIT, Wisc. (6/17/12) - The Burlington Bees (32-37) received another strong performance from A.J. Cole and defeated the Beloit Snappers (39-31) 6-to-2 on Sunday afternoon. The win helped the Bees end the first half of the season with two consecutive wins.
A.J. Cole pitched five innings and only allowed five hits and two earned runs. The two earned runs came on ground balls by Nate Roberts, but Cole avoided allowing many fly balls on a windy day in Beloit. He helped his own cause by not yielding any walks and striking out six batters. The right-hander remains one of the best strikeout artists on the club.
Cole didn't get the win, but the Bees relieved him with four scoreless innings out of the pen. Chas Mye (1-0) picked up his first victory after pitching 2.1 and only allowing one walk and striking out two batters. Mye's ERA dropped to an impressive 2.91 to end the first half of the year.
Jose Macias and Jeff Urlaub combined for 1.2 innings and did not allow a hit, walk, or run. Overall, the Bees' pitching staff earned ten strikeouts while only walking one batter. The Snappers went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and only had five hits in 31 at bats.
The offense took its time, but finished the game with a flurry of runs. Bobby Crocker hit his fifth home run of the season in the top of the sixth with two outs. Crocker's two-run bomb scored Douglas Landaeta and tied the game 2-to-2.
The Bees scored again on a solo home run by Royce Consigli in the seventh inning. Consigli's fifth homer of the year gave the Bees a 3-to-2 lead and helped Consigli finish the first half hitting .313 in his last five games.
The Bees scored an insurance-run in the eighth on an RBI double by Landaeta. They scored two more times on a two-run home run by Sean Jamieson in the top of the ninth. Jamieson's next at bat will come on Tuesday, when he represents the Bees and the Western Division in the 2012 Midwest League All-Star Game.
The Bees won their final two series to end the first half with a 32-37 record. Their next game takes place at Community Field on Friday, June 22 against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. For information on Bees baseball call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com.
