Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
Hidalgo, Texas --- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League (CHL) today announced the signing of defenseman Brent Cummings. The Bees also extended tryout offers to defenseman Travis Leighton and forward/defenseman Austin Corredato.
Cummings played 32 games last season at Minnesota State-Mankato and posted four points (1-3-4) and 51 PIM. He previously played junior hockey in the United States Hockey League for the Topeka Scarecrows and St. Louis Heartland Eagles. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Austin, Minn., native was an assistant captain with St. Louis and led the team in assists during the 2003-04 season.
"Brent brings the experience of having played in one of the top Division 1 college conferences in the county," explained Killer Bees head coach Paul Fixter. "He also played highly competitive junior hockey in the USHL. He's a big, strong, stay-at-home defenseman who I expect to be a solid addition to our defensive corps."
The Killer Bees also offered tryout agreements to forward/defenseman Austin Corredato and defenseman Travis Leighton.
Corredato played for three teams last season in the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League. He also spent two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League and another in the Quebec Major Junior League. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Toronto native played a total of 147 games of major junior hockey, collecting 25 points (11-14-25) and 119 PIM. Last season, he totaled 37 points (21-16-37) and 93 PIM in 43 games.
A 6-foot-3, 200-pound blueliner, Leighton is a native of Fairbanks, Alaska, who has had past tryouts with ECHL clubs in Stockton and Peoria.
"Both of these players are looking to make a name for themselves, and I'm happy to give them every opportunity to do so," said Fixter.
