Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

Five seconds into the game, Rio Grande Valley's Ryan Shmyr dropped the gloves for the first time in 14 games and went toe-to-toe with Rayz forward Brad Wingfield to set the tone for the game. Shmyr then went on to tally his first professional regular season two-goal game Sunday night to help lead the Bees past the Corpus Christi Rayz 5-2 Sunday night in front of a festive Dodge Arena crowd of 5,332. The win gives the Bees a season high four-game home winning streak and increases the Bees Southeast Division second place lead over the Austin Ice Bats to four standing-points, as Austin lost at home to Tulsa 5-3.

Shmyr had tallied a two-goal game two seasons ago for the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League, but it was during post-season play. His two goals in this contest were tallied all in the first period of play in similar fashion. The first, followed a goal by Bill Newson, as Jason Tessier fired the shot from the point and Shmyr played the rebound past Rayz goaltender Greg Hewitt on the power play 6:33 into the period. Shmyr's second goal closed out the Bees season high four-goal first period with 1:07 remaining in the period. Bill Newson was attempting to stuff the puck past Hewitt in front of the net and Shmyr stepped in and played two rebounds of his own before finally getting one of the rebounds past Hewitt.

Troy Linna led a charge for the Bees down the ice and hit Justin Van Parys with a cross ice pass in the attacking zone. Van Parys was able to edge past Rayz all-star defenseman Mike Tilson and play the pass past Hewitt from the right slot to give the Bees a 5-0 lead. That would be it for Hewitt, who only stopped 4 of 9 shots in 26:51 seconds of play. Original Pittsburgh Penguin first round draft selection (96 NHL Entry Draft) Craig Hilliar came in the rest of the way and kept the Bees off the board.

The Rayz did get on the board, scoring a goal with 29-seconds remaining in the period to end the Bees team series shutout sequence against the Rayz at 111:34, with Jonathan St.Louis doing the honors. Defenseman Clint Way fired a shot off a face-off from the right-point 7:51 into the third period to tally a power play goal, which ended the Bees streak of four games without allowing a power play goal.

The Bees now rest up for a three-in-three weekend beginning next Friday, as the Bees open a home-and-home series with the Laredo Bucks at the Dodge Arena.
