Atlanta Beat News Release
ATLANTA (August 7, 2003) - The Atlanta Beat clinched home field advantage in the playoffs, after tying the CyberRays 1-1 in San Jose on Wednesday night. Charmaine Hooper notched her 9th goal of the season in the first half to put the Beat ahead. Katia tied the game, but it was not enough, as the Beat ended the CyberRays season. The Beat returns home this weekend for an important match that will determine the regular season champion and playoff seeding. The WUSA Semifinal game is slated for Sunday, August 17, 6:00 p.m. at Herndon Stadium
Tonight the Atlanta Beat (9-4-7, 34 points) earned the right to host a WUSA Semifinal game with a 1-1 tie on the road versus the San Jose CyberRays (7-9-4, 25 points). The tie gave the Beat a home field playoff game, after Washington suffered a loss to the Philadelphia Charge on Wednesday night. Washington has one game remaining, but with 31 points can only catch the Beat in points and Atlanta holds the series tiebreaker with a 2-0-1 record versus Washington this season.
The Beat and Boston Breakers each have 34 points heading into the final game of the season. If tied in points, the Beat would win the head-to-head tiebreaker.
The Beat returns home this Sunday at 6:30 p.m. to wrap up the regular season against the New York Power in a game where the 2003 WUSA Regular Season championship will be on the line.
Tickets for the Beat's home playoff game go on-sale Thursday, August 7, at 10 a.m. through TicketMaster www.ticketmaster.com or 404-249-6400) and specially discounted tickets for groups of 11 or more are available by calling the Beat at 1-877-SOCCER-1.
