San Diego Spirit News Release
SAN DIEGO - The wait is over. The San Diego Spirit have made it to the WUSA postseason party for the first time in franchise history by virtue of Carolina's loss and San Jose's tie in tonight's WUSA action. The Spirit host the Washington Freedom on Saturday at 1 p.m. with a chance to finish in third place and secure the first winning season in club history, if they can beat Mia Hamm and company in a nationally televised game.
San Diego, which currently has a 7-6-7 record with 28 points, cannot be passed by Carolina (24 points) or San Jose (24 points) in the standings. The Spirit finished the 2001 season narrowly missing the playoffs with a 7-7-7 record. In 2002, the team never challenged for a postseason berth compiling a 5-11-5 mark.
The WUSA semifinals will be played next weekend on Saturday and Sunday. San Diego can finish no better than third place and will go on the road for its semifinal game. The winners of the semifinal contests will meet on Sunday, August 24, 1 p.m. at Torero Stadium in Founders Cup III to determine the 2003 WUSA champion. Tickets for Founders Cup III are available through Ticketmaster at 619-220-TIXS.
