Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ - An RBI infield single by John Pachot and near-historical performance by starter Benito Baez carried the Newark Bears to a 4-3 win over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Monday night.

After allowing the tying run to score in the top of the ninth, Newark started the winning rally in the bottom of the tenth when Jose Herrera and Cory Aldridge both singled to lead off the inning, and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Keith Reed. Randall Simon was then intentionally walked to load the bases for Gerard Haran who proceeded to pop out. With two outs, Pachot chipped an infield single to plate Herrera and give the Bears the win.

The Blue Crabs tied the game in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by pinch hitter Christopher Maples. An unassisted double play by second baseman Ramon Nivar got the Bears out of the inning without any more Crabs runs.

Baez carried a no-hitter through seven innings before surrendering an infield single in the eighth. After Baez walked Clinton Johnston to start the inning, James Shanks delivered a single to the left side of the infield and beat out the throw from third baseman Mike Just to end Baez's "no-no" campaign. With two Blue Crabs on base, shortstop George Sandel hit a two-RBI single to make the score 3-2. Baez lasted seven and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs on two hits, four walks, and season-high eight strikeouts.

The Bears scored their first three runs early in the game. Herrera put the Bears on the board in the first inning with a two-run home run to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. The homer was Herrera's third of the season. They added another run in the second inning, making the score 3-0. After getting hit by a pitch to get on base, Haran scored on a throwing error by Sandel.

Edwin Almonte (3-2) pitched a scoreless one and two thirds innings to earn the victory, while Derrick DePriest (1-5) was saddled with the loss.

The Bears continue their series against the Blue Crabs tomorrow evening with a 7:05 game. Franklin Gracesqui (0-1) will be making his second start for the Bears, facing Jonathan Connolly (0-1). For great seats, call 1-866-55-4BEAR or visit the Bears' website www.newarkbears.com.
