Newark Bears News Release
Newark, NJ â Wednesday, May 15, 2002 â The Newark Bears extended their winning streak to four games as they came back to defeat the Bridgeport Bluefish by a final score of 6-5. Three costly errors by Bluefish shortstop Gabby Martinez enabled the Bears to remain undefeated at home.
Both starters, Byron Batson for Newark and Pat Ahearne for Bridgeport were long gone before a 4-4 tie was finally broken in the bottom of the eighth.
Edgar Tovar led off with a single to right field. After Joe Mathis popped up a bunt to third base, Jimmy Hurst singled to centerfield, advancing Tovar to third. Following a pinch hit strikeout by Wes Chamberlain, Pito Ramirez walked to load the bases. Marcus Knight, who had homered in the seventh, hit what should have been a routine ground ball to Martinez at short, however he bobbled the ball and then threw it into centerfield allowing two unearned runs to score.
Bluefish reliever Mike Guilfoyle (0-1) was stuck with the loss as a result of that inning, while Denny Bair (1-0) got the win and Rick Greene (4) got the save. Jose Amado was 2-for-4 for with a homerun and 2 RBI's for Bridgeport and Jimmy Hurst was the only Bear to pick up more than one hit on the day.
Newark and Bridgeport will play game three of this three game series tomorrow night at 6:35 pm. Tickets are still available by calling 973.483.6900 or through any Ticketmaster outlet in the tri-state area.
