Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, N. J. - The Newark Bears will conduct open player tryouts on Saturday, April 5 at 9 a.m. on the field at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Players interested in latching on with the 2002 Atlantic League Champions will have the opportunity to showcase their skills under the watchful eyes of Bears manager and four-time National League batting champion Bill Madlock, pitching coach and seven-season major league veteran Pete Filson and Newark's Director of Player Personnel George Moreira.

"This is a great opportunity for players to come out and show us what they've got," Newark Vice President/General Manager Chris Bryan said. "We look forward to potentially uncovering players who can help this team defend its championship."

The fee for the tryout is $40 and can be paid upon registration. Each participant should come dressed and ready to play and if possible bring their own wooden bat. The team will provide each participant with a t-shirt. All proceeds from the event go towards the Newark Bears Foundation. Created by team founder Rick Cerone, the Bears Foundation was formed in 1998 to provide assistance in inner-city youth.

All players will be timed in a 60-yard dash. Positions players will be evaluated defensively and then will take batting practice. Pitchers will throw off a mound in the Bears bullpen.

The Newark Bears compete in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. The Atlantic League consists of eight teams in five different states and enters its sixth season of competition on May 1. Single-game tickets are already on sale. The Bears 2003 Schedule, Season Ticket Packages and Promotional Schedule for their Fifth Anniversary in the City of Newark have already been announced and can be viewed at www.NewarkBears.com.
