Bears Take Weekend Pair from Patriots

NEWARK, NJ, April 21-The defending Atlantic League Champion Newark Bears opened up their 2008 pre-season schedule with a pair of victories over the Somerset Patriots this past weekend. In order to get pitchers from both teams their full workloads, both games were 11 innings in length.

Saturday at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark, the Bears blanked the Patriots 2-0. Right-hander Mike Bumstead started for Newark and tossed three scoreless frames, allowing a pair of hits and a walk, while striking out one batter. Relievers Josh Fields and Corey Willey each pitched one perfect inning.

Centerfielder Keith Reed had two of Newark's 5 hits on Saturday, and also threw Somerset's Pete Moore out at homeplate. Third-baseman Mike Just stole two bases, scored a run, and also made a diving defensive gem for the Bears.

Sunday at Jack Cust Baseball Academy in Somerville, the Bears scored a 7-2 triumph, with Cory Aldridge (three-run home run), Bobby Hill (two-run blast), and Tim Sweeney (solo shot) all contributing with the long ball. Just delivered a 5-5 performance at the plate, and stole another base. Aldridge and Sweeney each had two hits.

Benito Baez and Matt Sweeney each allowed one run over three innings of work on the mound for Newark, while youngsters David Pellegrine and Chris Rubio each tossed two scoreless frames. Rubio added 4 strikeouts, as well.

Newark will play one more pre-season contest, this Wednesday, the 23rd of April, against Rutgers-Newark University. The game will be played at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, beginning at 6:00 PM, and will be preceded by a team autograph session from 5:00-5:30. Admission to the pre-season game is free.

The Bears open up defense of their 2007 Atlantic League Championship this Friday, April 25th against the Long Island Ducks, before playing their home opener on Tuesday, April 29th at 7:05PM against the Bridgeport Bluefish at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The home opener will feature a pre-game championship ceremony, an appearance by the loveable traveling mascot Rally, post-game fireworks, and all fans will receive a Bears 2008 magnetic schedule, presented by WSOU-89.5 FM.
