(Central Islip, N.Y., Sept. 6, 2010) - The Newark Bears defeated the Long Island Ducks 7-5 in a make-up game on Monday afternoon at Suffolk County Sports Park in Central Islip, New York. The win gave Newark a 2-1 series win, a series that began on August 20th.
The Bears took an early advantage for the fourth time in the last five games. Tim Raines Jr. led off with a walk and stole a base against Chris McCoy. After Sandy Madera pushed him to third with a single, Brian Barton plated him with a RBI single to make it 1-0 Newark. Nine batters came to the plate in the second inning for the Bears to bring home four more runs. Raines Jr. continued his league-best 19-game hit streak with a RBI single followed two batters later by Madera, who was hit-by-pitch with the bases-loaded to force home another run. A Carl Everett sacrifice fly and Barton's second RBI single pushed the lead to 4-0 Bears.
Brian "Doc" Holliday picked up where Bob Zimmermann left off on Sunday with a strong outing in his second start. Holliday scattered two hits through his first three frames, while striking out three batters. The Ducks touched Holliday in the fourth inning as Javier Colina plated Matt Esquivel with a one-out RBI single to put Long Island on the scoreboard. Holliday set down eight of his next nine batters as he worked a perfect fifth and sixth inning.
Long Island made it a ballgame in the seventh as a hit-by-pitch, a single and a walk loaded the bases to end Holliday's afternoon. Matt Cavagnaro unloaded on a 3-2 pitch from Drew Coffey with a grand slam to left to tie the game at 5-5. In the visitor's eight inning, Eric Munson and Isaiah Kaaihue reached on back-to-back single and moved up a successful sacrifice bunt by James Cooper. Raines Jr., who finished 2-for-4, doubled off the wall in left to plate a pair and put the Bears up for good 7-5. The Ducks threatened in the eighth and ninth putting two on in each frame, but reliever Will Cunnane and Matt Smith shut the door for the Newark win.
Cunnane (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing one and two-third innings, surrendering just one hit while striking out two. Ryan Drese (0-1) was dealt the loss, allowing two runs on five hits, with a walk and two strikeouts in four innings of relief. Smith picked up his second save of the season as he recorded the final two outs of the game.
Newark returns to Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Tuesday, September 7 to begin the final homestand of 2010 and kicks it off with four-game series against the Blue Crabs. Game time is set for 5:05 p.m., with the gates of the "Den" swinging open at 4:05 p.m. This is a time change with the teams set to play two, seven-inning games. One game will serve as a makeup from a rainout down in Waldorf last month. Game two will start approximately 30 minute following the conclusion of game one. Tuesday is "Silver Sluggers" Day at the "Den". Silver Sluggers is a promotional program presented by the Newark Bears and Healthfirst Health Plan of New Jersey for seniors 55 years or older. Seniors will receive discounted ticket rates to select afternoon baseball games and have an opportunity to participate in fun group activities throughout the game.
