Bears sign deal to bring back Matt Brunson

NEWARK, NJ - March 15, 2007 - The Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club announced Matt Brunson has signed a contract to play in Newark for 2007 season. With the signing, the switch-hitting second baseman returns to the Bears for his second season.

After joining the Bears in July of last season, he batted .286 with five doubles, two home runs, and scored 44 runs. Brunson led the Bears with 46 walks and finished third in the Atlantic League with a .414 on-base percentage.

Originally drafted in the first round, ninth overall, by the Detroit Tigers in 1993 draft, Brunson played three seasons in the Tigers organization before attending the University of Colorado, where he played wide receiver for the Buffaloes. In 2005, Brunson returned to baseball with Yuma of the Golden League where he finished the year first in the league with 32 stolen bases, third with 67 walks and 67 runs scored. Before joining the Bears last season, the Colorado native played for Brockton of the Canadian-American League batting .224 with three doubles, four RBI, and seven runs scored in 17 games.

"When Matt joined the Bears after the all-star break he provided an instant spark that continued to the end of the season," said Bears Assistant General Manager of Baseball Operations Jim Cerny. "We look for Matt to bring that same spark into the 2007 season.

The Newark Bears will begin their ninth season at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Tuesday, May 8 against the Bridgeport Bluefish.
