Bears Hold Open Tryouts For 2008 Season

NEWARK, NJ -The defending Atlantic League Champion Newark Bears Professional Club held their annual open tryout for the 2008 season Sunday at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Bears Manager Wayne Krenchicki, new Hitting Coach Ryan Jones, and Bears right-handed pitcher Patrick Stanley, infielder Tim Sweeney, and catcher Scott Knazek were all on hand as they evaluated over one hundred players trying out for the team.

One player from the tryout, catcher Gerard Haran of Matawan, NJ, has earned an invite to Newark Bears spring training with an opportunity to make the 2008 roster. The 22 year-old Haran is a former College of New Jersey star, and he played last year in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Several other players from the tryouts are still being considered for spring training invites.

Krenchicki will open up his second spring training as Bears manager this upcoming weekend. Once again, the team will hold spring training at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark, and all workouts are open to the public.

The Bears will host one pre-season game at The Den on Saturday, April the 19th against the Somerset Patriots at 12 noon. Admission to the pre-season game is free.

Newark will play its regular season home opener on Tuesday, April 29th at 7:05PM against the Bridgeport Bluefish at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Prior to the game there will be a ceremony commemorating the club's 2007 Atlantic League title, featuring the presentation of rings and a banner ceremony. Rally, the loveable traveling mascot, will be on hand Opening Day, and there will be post-game fireworks, as well. In addition, all fans will receive a 2008 Newark Bears magnetic schedule, presented by WSOU-89.5 FM.
