
Bears hand Patriots fourth straight loss

Bridgewater, NJ - The Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 3-1 at TD Bank Ballpark on Tuesday evening.
The Bears took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Second baseman Bobby Hill led off the game with a double and scored on an RBI single by right fielder Jay Gibbons.
Newark scored a run in the top of the fourth inning. Third baseman Ramon Nivar singled and scored on an RBI single by catcher Alberto Castillo for a 2-0 lead.
Somerset got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo home run by left fielder Jon Nelson (1) to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Bears extended the lead with a run in the top of the eighth inning. Castillo singled and would later score on a wild pitch to make the score 3-1.
Somerset had the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but failed to plate any runs.
Newark starter Ryan Bukvich (1-0) picked up the win, allowing an earned run on four hits and five strikeouts in eight innings pitched. Patriots starter Josh Miller (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in five innings pitched. Keith Foulke earned his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning pitched.
