
Bears earn victory against Patriots, 6-4

NEWARK, NJ - June 12, 2006 - The Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 6-4 at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium Monday evening. With the win, Newark stands at 3-2 against Somerset for the 2006 season.
Bears reliever Nick Maness (1-1) earned his first victory of the season after pitching three scoreless innings, allowing only two hits, while striking out two. He relieved starter Carlos Mirabal, who made his first appearance of the season allowing two hits and three runs, none of them earned, and struck out five in three innings pitched. Patriots starter Todd Moser (1-2) took the loss after pitching six innings, yielding five runs on seven hits, and Jeremy Hill picked up his first save of the season.
The Bears jumped out to an early lead when left fielder Jose Herrera got things started with a two out single in the bottom of the first inning. Right fielder Will Pennyfeather continued with a walk, and center fielder Al Benjamin hit an RBI single, followed by an RBI double by first baseman Dario Delgado to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.
After the Patriots took the lead in the top of the third with RBI singles by left fielder Larry Barnes and catcher Fernando Lunar, and an RBI groundout by second baseman George Sandel, the Bears grabbed the lead back with a sacrifice fly by second baseman Liu Rodriguez, and an two-RBI double by third baseman Lipso Nava to give the Bears a 6-3 lead.
The Bears were led by Herrera going 2-for-4 with a single, triple, and run scored, and Benjamin going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Lunar led the Patriots offense going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Bears and Patriots continue this series Tuesday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 pm. David Shepard (2-5) will make his ninth start of the season for the Bears, while Jason Olson (3-3) will start for the Patriots.
