Bears activate Mirabal, will start tonight

NEWARK, NJ - June 12, 2006 - The Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club announced today they have activated RHP Carlos Mirabal from the inactive list, and in turn he will start this evening's game against the Somerset Patriots beginning at 7:05 pm, at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. In addition, the Bears have signed and activated infielder Alexis Hernandez, and placed left-handed pitcher Silvio Censale on the disabled list retroactive to June 4.

Mirabal, who has been inactive since the beginning of the season, signed with the Bears during the off-season, for his 12th professional season. The former Farleigh Dickenson star signed with the New York Yankees in 1995 as a non-drafted free agent. Mirabal started 16 of 17 games for the Altoona Rail Kings in 1996, and after playing for the Taiwan Professional Baseball Leagues from 1997 to 1999, the Ringwood, New Jersey native joined the Nippon Ham Fighters of the Japanese Professional League. While playing for Nippon in 2003, he established career highs in wins with 16, and strikeouts with 103.

Alexis Hernandez is in his sixth professional season, after beginning his career in Cuba. He spent the 2005 season with Yuma of the Golden League, appearing in 77 games, batting .326 with 47 runs scored and 73 RBI, setting career highs in games played, runs scored, RBI, hits with 91, doubles with 29, home runs with 14. His 73 RBI and 29 doubles were ranked second in the league, while his 14 home runs and .588 slugging percentage ranked first. He began the 2006 season with Sioux Falls of the American Association League before moving to Nashua of the Can-Am League with a .343 batting average, 12 hits including three doubles and a home run, nine RBI, and two runs scored.

The Bears begin an eleven-game home stand this evening beginning with a game against the Patriots. This home stand includes a doubleheader on Wednesday, June 14, with game one being the make up game for the postponed game at Somerset on Thursday, June 8, with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 pm.
