Newark Bears News Release

Newark, NJ –Friday, June 28, 2002 – The Newark Bears continued to pound the Bridgeport Bluefish in game two of tonight's double header, walking away with a 10-3 win, and outscoring the Bluefish by a total of 22-6 on the evening. John DeSilva (4-3) picked up his first win as a Bear, after joining the team via a trade last week.

Catcher Jason Torres led Newark's offensive onslaught by going 2-for-4, with a pair of runs scored and four total runs batted in. Paul Esposito, who followed Torres in the line-up went 2-for-2, with 2 RBI to also push Newark on the winning end.

DeSilva went six strong innings, allowing just three runs on seven hits and two walks while picking up three strikeouts. Gil Perez (2-5) only lasted 3.2 innings for Bridgeport and departed after allowing eight runs on nine hits and two walks.

Oreste Marrero hit his seventh homerun of the season for the Bluefish in the fourth inning. Despite scoring 22 runs in 14 innings tonight, the Bears failed to go deep, instead combined base hits and doubles to rack up the runs.
