Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ, May 17-Matt Wagner and Andy Hazlett combined on a one-hit shutout as the Newark Bears shut out the Pennsylvania Road Warriors, 6-0, Saturday night at Riverfront Stadium. It was the second consecutive shutout for the Bears over the Road Warriors after Newark blanked Pennsylvania, 8-0, Friday night.
Wagner (2-0) tossed eight innings, allowing only one hit to earn the victory. The right-hander struck out seven batters and did not walk any, allowing only a second inning single to third-baseman Dario Delgado. Wagner retired the final 19 batters he faced in the game. Andy Hazlett struck out two in the ninth inning to finish the game.
Bears centerfielder Mike Piercy, a Newark native, ignited the offense by tying a franchise record with three stolen bases. Piercy was 3-4 at the plate with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.
First-baseman Tom Hage, who drove in the game's first run with a 1st inning single, was 2-5 with 2 RBI for Newark. Catcher Jason Torres also had two hits and he delivered an RBI double in the 4th inning.
Bears pitchers have limited the Road Warriors to no runs and only seven hits over the first two games of the series. The two teams will play the series finale Sunday afternoon with Newark's Jose Lima (3-0) looking for his fourth win of the season.
