Bears blank Pride, 3-0

Newark Bears righthander Andy Zwirchitz and three relievers combined on a five-hitter Wednesday night as the Bears blanked the Nashua Pride, 3-0, at Historic Holman Stadium. Zwirchitz (1-0) worked into the sixth inning to post his first win of the season.

Pride starter Rob Averette (0-3) allowed all three Newark runs in his six innings of work and suffered the loss. It marked the first time the Pride (9-9) have been shutout this season.

The Bears (9-10) scored two in the second inning on a two-run homer by third baseman Jose Olmeda, his third of the year. Newark added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by designated hitter Jeremy Todd.

Pride designated hitter Glenn Murray went hitless in four at bats. Murray saw his consecutive game on-base streak come to an end at 17. Nashua leadoff man David Francia was the only member of the Pride with two hits. Francia q had a pair of singles in four trips to the plate.

The Pride and the Bears complete their four-game series Thursday night at 6:35 in Nashua. Lefthander Brian Looney (0-1, 2.25) will pitch for the Pride with fellow southpaw Brent Billingsley (0-2, 5.55) scheduled to work for Newark.
