Bears Beat Bluefish, 10-5

NEWARK, NJ, June 12-The Newark Bears hit three home runs on their way to a 10-5 victory over the Bridgeport Bluefish Thursday night at Riverfront Stadium. The victory brings Newark back to the .500 mark on the season with a record of 19-19.

The Bears raced out to a 4-0 lead, scoring three runs in the first inning on Pete Maestrales' three-run home run, his second of the season, and one in the fourth inning on Bryan Britt's solo home run, his 4th of the year.

Bridgeport took the lead by scoring five times in the fifth inning off of Bears starter Matt Wagner (4-1). Hector Kulian and Jose Offerman hit two-run home runs off of Wagner in the inning. Wagner settled down and earned the win, pitching 8 innings and allowing 5 runs (1 earned) on 9 hits. Wagner struck out 2 and did not walk a batter.

Wil Quintana hit a two-run home run in the bottom half of the fifth to give Newark a 6-5 lead. The Bears put the game away in the 6th inning, scoring four times, three on Danny Clyburn's bases loaded double. Clyburn, who was 2-5 with 3 RBI on the night, has now hit safely in eight consecutive games.

In the ninth inning Damon Ponce de Leon entered the game after Manny Barrios loaded the bases with none out and recorded the final three outs to earn his 3rd save.
