Thomas was a tenth round selection by the Philadelphia Phillies during the 1996 draft, and has played at the triple-A level seven times in his career. While playing for Scranton Wilkes-Barre of the International League in 2000, Evan set a career high with 13 wins, 29 games pitched, 27 starts, and 171 innings pitched. During that season, he finished first in the league with two shutouts, second in strikeouts with 127, wins, and innings pitched, as well as fourth in games started, and eighth with a 3.53 ERA.
The Florida native began the 2004 season with the Camden Riversharks of the Atlantic League, starting all 13 games he appeared in, posting a record of 8-1 with two complete games. His contract was later purchased by the Cleveland Indians, where he was sent to their triple-A affiliate in Buffalo. That season, he finished first in the Atlantic League with a 3.62 ERA and one shutout.
"Evan brings 12 years of professional experience and leadership to our pitching staff this season, and has shown he can excel in the Atlantic League from his time with Camden," said Bears Assistant General Manager of Baseball Operations Jim Cerny. "We are looking forward to seeing him in spring training and in a Bears uniform this season."
The Newark Bears will begin their ninth season at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Tuesday, May 8 against the Bridgeport Bluefish.
