Butler BlueSox News Release
Butler, PA - February 25, 2013 - A quick outfielder out of North Hills, Taylor Schmidt signed with the BlueSox last year, but an injury stopped him from coming to Butler. Things are looking up for 2013 though, with Schmidt and Russell Clark, his teammate at the University of Cincinnati, slated to take the field for the BlueSox once again.
"It's great to have Taylor's commitment once again for 2013," said BlueSox' manager Anthony Rebyanski. Schmidt played in 12 games for Cincinnati last spring. Off to a super-hot start, he was hitting .500 with a .541 on-base percentage, and four stolen bases when the injury cut his season short. He has played in all six of the Bearcat's games this year.
"It was unfortunate that he had the injury last spring and couldn't join us," said Rebyanski. "He has a lot of good tools, and with those tools is going to be an immediate impact guy for us both offensively and defensively."
Schmidt set multiple school records at North Hills High School including batting average, stolen bases, and RBIs. He was a two-time member of all-WPIAL first team and recipient of the WPIAL All-Star MVP Award. The Pittsburgh Tribune Review and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette both named him a top local baseball player.
Schmidt also lettered in varsity football three years as a QB and an All-State defensive back.
Just a half hour's drive from North Hills, Russell Clark started every game in his four-year high school baseball career at Pine Richland. He lettered all four seasons.
"I had the chance to see Russell a few times while at Pine Richland," said Rebyanski. "He's a big, strong, athletic kid that will be one of our three catchers. Being the athletic and versatile kid he is, I look for him to also get some time at one of the infield corner spots."
He was named a Quad-A All-Star and to the Rawlings All-Atlantic Region Second Team in high school. He has appeared in four games for the Bearcats this spring as a freshman, starting two.
"Behind the plate, he is a very good defensive catcher with a strong arm," said Rebyanski. "The more reps that Russell gets this spring and summer, the better player he is going to become. I look forward to seeing him progress as the spring continues and throughout the summer."
Two more 2013 BlueSox will be announced next week.
