Oakland County Cruisers News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums have announced the addition of an exhibition game against the two-time defending Northern League Champions, the Gary RailCats. The game is slated for 3 PM on Tuesday, May 13th, and will be played in Gary, Indiana, at the home of the RailCats, the U.S. Steel Yard. The RailCats will travel to Wuerfel Park for an exhibition game in 2009.
"This is a great opportunity and challenge for our 2008 team," said Jason Wuerfel, the Beach Bums' Director of Baseball Operations. "Gary has set the standard for good baseball in the Northern League and it will be a great test for our players and evaluation tool for our coaching staff."
The Gary RailCats have won the Northern League Championship two out of the last three years, taking the crown home in 2005 and 2007 behind field manager Greg Taggert. Taggert moved to the Northern League in 2005 after coaching for nine seasons in the Frontier League, where he remains the league's all-time leader in career victories with 412.
Frontier League fans who make the trip to Gary to watch the game will see a few familiar faces on the RailCats roster. The RailCats feature three former Frontier Leaguers including OF/DH Mike Reese, who played for the Beach Bums in 2006. The other two are Dale Mueller, who played outfield for Evansville, and Stephen Spragg, who formerly pitched for Washington.
