BALTIMORE, Md. - Looking to rebound from a tough 14-12 loss to Rochester on Sunday afternoon, the Baltimore Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) make the short trip to Philadelphia to face the Barrage at Villanova Stadium on Saturday night. Opening face-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
Saturday night's game with Philadelphia will mark the first meeting between the Bayhawks and former goalkeeper Greg Cattrano, who was traded to the Barrage on October 13, 2003 after three seasons with Baltimore. He had a 27-12 record in three seasons as the team's only starting goalkeeper. He helped the Bayhawks win three straight National Division titles and appear in three straight MLL Championship games. Cattrano was named the 2002 Bud Light MLL MVP and the 2002 Warrior Goalkeeper of the Year after leading the Bayhawks to the MLL title. During his Bayhawk career, Cattrano had played in all but 34 minutes of regular season play. He had a career .594 save percentage while with Baltimore during those three seasons and allowed 12.6 goals per game.
Now 2-2 on the season, the Bayhawks saw an end to their nine-game win streak against National Division opponents come to an end with the two-point defeat to Rochester on Sunday afternoon. It also snapped an eight-game win streak in the series with the Rattlers. Attackman Ryan Powell led the Rattler offense with a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists, while rookie goalkeeper Tillman Johnson had an impressive debut with the Rattlers, making 22 saves and being named Bud Light Game MVP for his efforts. The Rattlers held the Bayhawks to just 11 goals, which are the fewest scored by a team in a MLL game this season. Attackman Tom Marechek paced the Baltimore offense with his first hat trick of the season, a three-goal performance that included a pair of goals in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Attackman Mark Millon and midfielder Gary Gait extended their streaks of consecutive games with a goal in the loss to Rochester. Millon has now registered at least one goal in 16 straight games after a two-goal game, including the third two-pointer of the season. Meanwhile, Gait scored in his 20th straight game, extending his team record, after scoring two goals with two assists. Rookie netminder Mike Levin made 20 saves in the loss for the host Bayhawks, who have lost their first two home games for the first time in team history.
After starting the season with three straight losses, the Philadelphia Barrage picked up their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 15-12 decision over New Jersey, ruining the Pride's home opener. Cattrano made 22 saves in the win for the Barrage and was named the League's Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. Attackman Michael Springer guided the Barrage offense in the victory, recording five points on three goals, including a two-pointer, and an assist. Attackman Blake Miller also recorded a hat trick in the victory for the Barrage, which snapped an eight-game losing streak, dating back to last season.
This will be the seventh all-time meeting between the Barrage and the Bayhawks with the series deadlocked at 3-3. The road team has won in each of the last four games of the series, including the Barrage's 22-17 win at Homewood Field on July 19 against the Bayhawks. Last season, the Bayhawks had won the first game at Ballpark at Harbor Yard by 21-14 before the July 19 setback.
Saturday's game starts a two-game road trip for the Bayhawks, who will travel to Uniondale, New York to face the defending league champion Long Island Lizards next Friday before returning home on July 10 in a rematch with the Rattlers at Unitas Stadium.
