BayHawks Cruise Past Red Claws, 116-97

Erie, Pennsylvania, Sunday, January 9, 2011 - Three Erie BayHawks players recorded double-doubles and the home team used a big third quarter to down the visiting Maine Red Claws 116-97 Sunday afternoon at Tullio Arena.

Ivan Johnson and Solomon Alabi each dropped in 10 points in the first quarter as the BayHawks clung to a four point lead, 36-32. The Red Claws hung around thanks to Mario West's 17 points in the second quarter and the BayHawks held just a six-point lead at the break, 59-53.

But Erie knocked down six three-pointers and Blake Ahearn scored all of his 10 points in the third quarter as the BayHawks lead grew to 19 points by outscoring Maine 31-18 in the frame to take control, 90-71. An even fourth quarter finished off the BayHawks fourth straight win as they improved to 13-6.

Johnson had a team high 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Alabi, on assignment from the Toronto Raptors, dropped in 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, and Ahearn added 10 points and dished out 12 assists. Three other Erie players scored in double figures: Kyle Spain had 20, Garrett Temple notched 19 and Tasmin Mitchell added 10.

Maine was lead by West's 26, Tiny Gallon had 18, DeShawn Sims scored 17 and Eugene Spates recorded 12 as they dropped to 9-11.

Both teams head to South Padre Island, Texas for the 2011 NBA Development League Showcase, the NBA's in-season basketball scouting event, that runs Monday through Thursday and features all 16 NBA D-League teams playing two games each over a four-day schedule in front of professional scouts from all 30 NBA teams.

Erie plays the Idaho Stampede on Tuesday at 8 pm ET, then face the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Wednesday at 8 pm ET. Tuesday's game can be watched online at nba.com/dleague and Wednesday's contest will be broadcast live to a national TV audience on VERSUS. Both games will also be broadcast live on local radio at AM 1330 The Fan.
