Chesapeake Bayhawks News Release

Denver, CO - The Bayhawks (1-2) jumped out to a big early lead versus the Denver Outlaws (2-1) on Saturday, but a difficult second half saw the Bayhawks lead disappear as the team fell 20-16. Kyle Dixon led the Bayhawks with four goals including two 2-point goals, and Billy Glading recorded his first career hat trick in the loss.

"I liked the way we jumped out early," said Bayhawks Head Coach John Tucker. "We didn't carry that intensity into the second half. Denver made it difficult for us to get scoring chances. Our offense needs to play better for us to win more."

The Bayhawks and Outlaws traded goals the entire first quarter, but the difference was Dixon's pair of two-point goals which gave the Bayhawks the early lead. Glading scored his first goal just over two-minutes into the game, but Denver quickly responded. After Kevin Huntley scored for the Bayhawks on a feed from Spencer Ford, Denver rookie Dan Hardy tied the game for the second time. Dixon finally broke the lead open with his two 2-point goals coming three minutes apart. Benson Erwin closed the scoring for the first quarter leaving the game at 7-4 in favor of Washington.

The second quarter started off just like the first with the Bayhawks tallying an early goal before the teams began trading scores. Tewaaraton Award winner Max Siebald helped Denver cut into the Bayhawks lead with his first goal of his career, a two-point tally making the score 8-6. After a Kevin Buchanan goal and a pair of goals for Denver, the Bayhawks rallied for three straight goals to close the first half and giving the Bayhawks a 12-8 lead heading to halftime.

Glading's second goal of the game opened the second half scoring and gave the Bayhawks their largest lead of the game at 13-8. Denver responded with three straight goals cutting the lead to two, 13-11. Dixon's third goal of the game broke the Denver scoring run and gave the All-Star midfielder his second hat trick of the season.

The Outlaws rallied for a seven goal scoring run to gain the lead and give the Bayhawks their largest scoring deficit of the season, trailing 18-14. Brian Vetter scored his first goal as a Bayhawk, and Glading added his third of the game with 16 seconds left in the game, but the Bayhawks fell 20-16.

Alex Smith continued his dominance at face-offs with his third straight game winning the battle. Smith won 27 of 40 face-offs and recorded a game high eight ground balls. Smith set the MLL record for face-off wins in a season in 2008 with 249, but he is on pace to win 276 this season. Smith has also won 64.5% of his face-off's this year. The current record for face-off winning percentage is held by former Bayhawk Paul Cantabene with a winning percentage of 63.3% in 2004.

The Bayhawks return home on Thursday, June 4th at 7:30pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, MD. Tickets are available now.
