BayHawks Bring a Night of Hope to Juvenile Diabetes

December 3, 2012 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) - Chesapeake Bayhawks News Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD - Chesapeake Bayhawks owner Brendan Kelly was honored at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Night of Hope Gala on November 17th in Baltimore, MD. In attendance with Kelly were Bayhawks midfielder Kyle Dixon, attackman Drew Westervelt, former general manager Brian Reese, and Boston Cannons face-off specialist Chris Eck.

"The opportunity to be the honoree of the JDRF Night of Hope Gala was one that hit very close to home," Kelly stated. "The peril of type 1 diabetes has affected my family and those close to me and I was excited to do my part in raising money towards research to find a cure."

JDRF is a leader in funding and advocating for type 1 research. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is a disease which strikes children and adults suddenly and requires multiple injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump. Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has awarded more than $1.6 billion to diabetes research. Currently, JDRF is funding 53 human clinical trials, several of which are in the advanced stages of clinical testing needed before FDA approvals are required.

In its silver anniversary, the JDRF Night of Hope Gala raised over $460,000 through sponsorships, table sales, a silent auction, and the Fund a Cure, which was the highest tally the event has raised in 8 years. The Fund a Cure platform allowed attendees to contribute 100% tax deductible amounts which went directly to research funding. More than 450 guests, including many of Maryland's elite corporations, attended and contributed to help JDRF cure, treat, and prevent type 1 diabetes.

"Partnering with the Chesapeake Bayhawks was an incredible lift for the JDRF Maryland Chapter and we thank owner Brendan Kelly for bringing his time, talent, personal and professional resources to the success of our Silver Anniversary Gala in November," JDRF executive director Tad Wood said. "We look forward to Brendan and the Bayhawks remaining faithful to curing, treating, and preventing type 1 diabetes.

T he Bayhawks began this journey with the JDRF during the 2012 season where they dedicated a home game to raising money for type 1 diabetes research. The team donated a percentage of proceeds back from ticket sales through their fundraising program and the money went to the Fund a Cure efforts.
