Bayhawks Beat the Lizards, Fan Poll, and more

The Washington Bayhawks went to Long Island with something to prove. They did just that with a 22-15 victory over the Lizards in their 2008 finale led by a huge six-goal effort from Andrew "Buggs" Combs. The Bayhawks also got a strong performance from Conor Gill who scored one goal and set the franchise single-game assist record with six.
Combs was named the Bud Light MVP for his performance which led a Bayhawks squad that had been very inconsistent on offense throughout the season. That was not the case on Saturday night. The Bayhawks scored early and often to jump out to an 8-2 lead after the first period. With a 4-2 lead midway through the first, Kyle Dixon scored a two-point goal to give Washington a commanding 6-2 lead. It was Dixon's fifth two-point goal of the season which led Major League Lacrosse in 2008. Matt Ward capped the six goal run for the Bayhawks at the end of the quarter with his second of three goals of the game.
The Bayhawks scored nine times in the second half including five of Combs' six goals and a two-point strike from Brendan Healy. Healy's goal at the 13:51 mark of the third quarter completed the hat-trick to join Ward and Combs on the game.
The offense was not the only story of the night. Bayhawks goalie Chris Collins made his first career MLL start and recorded his first win. Collins made nine saves to earn the win. He had seen playing time in each of the two previous games, but had yet to start.
"Everyone played great tonight," said Collins. "It's real special to be able to make my first start and get my first win. I'm just happy we could go out and get it done."
Face-off specialist Brekan Kohlitz also played in his first career MLL game. Kohlitz was drafted by the Bayhawks in the fifth round of the 2008 MLL Collegiate Draft out of the University of Michigan and was activated from the Practice Squad roster after veteran Kevin Frew was placed on Injured Reserve earlier in the week. Kohlitz is the third collegiate club lacrosse player to play in the MLL, but he was the first ever to be drafted. He looked good against one of the best face-off specialists in Long Island's Peter Vlahakis leading the Bayhawks with eight ground balls in his debut.
The Bayhawks concluded the 2008 season with an overall record of 4-8. After a quick 3-1 start to the season, the Bayhawks dropped seven straight contests, their longest in franchise history. Saturday's win ended the streak and will give the club something positive to build on as they head into the off-season.
