Bayhawks Announce 23 Man Protected List Sep 9th 2015, 16:00
ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND - After much deliberation and discussion, the Chesapeake Bayhawks have announced their 23 player Protected List, which was submitted to Major League Lacrosse at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
Chesapeake protected five attackmen, nine midfielders, five defensemen, two goalies and two faceoff specialists.
"It's always very difficult cutting the roster from 31 to 23. We have a lot of good players and we had to make some tough decisions," Chesapeake president Dave Cottle said.
The Bayhawks had two veteran players make the choice for them as attackman Ben Rubeor and goalkeeper Kip Turner have announced plans to retire. Both have elected to focus on their coaching responsibilities as Turner is an assistant at Brown while Rubeor was just named head coach at his alma mater Loyola-Blakefield in Towson.
Rubeor spent seven seasons with the Bayhawks and concluded his stellar career with 210 total points. Turner played four seasons with Chesapeake and a total of nine in MLL and amassed 961 career saves. Rubeor played on three championship teams for the Bayhawks while Turner was the starting goalkeeper for the 2012 and 2013 squads that hoisted the Steinfeld Cup.
Major League Lacrosse required the eight existing franchises to submit Protected Lists in advance of the Expansion Draft, which will be held November 18 (2 p.m.) via conference call. Commissioner Dave Gross recently announced creation of the Atlanta Blaze as the newest member of the league.
Atlanta will have access to some top tier talent as the other eight teams must further cut their rosters next month. Cottle will be facing a serious numbers crunch when the 10 to 12 player Protected List is due on October 7. That list can be 10 if teams protect two goalies and 12 if teams protect one goalie or less.
"Getting down to 10 or 12 players is going to be extremely challenging," Cottle said. "Unfortunately, the reality is that we are going to lose some outstanding players in the Expansion Draft."
