HOOVER, Ala. - Cesar Valdez was solid in his first full start in Double-A, but the BayBears just couldn't crank out enough offense to avoid a four-game sweep on Thursday as they fell to the Birmingham Barons 3-2 at Regions Park.

Valdez (0-1) was sharp for seven innings while allowing three runs on eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts. The second inning was the only sore spot for Valdez on as he surrendered three doubles in the frame which plated two runs. Bryan Byrne got one of those runs back in the top of the fifth with his fifth dinger off Birmingham (50-36, 10-6) starter Kyle McCulloch (6-7).

Ricardo Nanita's RBI groundout pushed the Barons up 3-1 while John Hester's sixth-inning homer cut the BayBears (35-51, 6-10) deficit back to one. In the ninth, Hester doubled off Barons closer Jon Link (S, 23) to start what could have been a comeback rally, but Hester was cut down at third on a groundball to short off the bat of Chris Rahl, zapping the threat.

Also on Thursday at Hank Aaron Stadium, the 5th Annual Mayor's Cup took place between the Mobile Fire Department and Police Department with the Firemen claming victory for the fifth year in a row in a 4-0 shutout.

Celebrate the Fourth of July with the BayBears on Friday as they open a four-game series with the Jacksonville Suns at 7:05. Game two of the series on Saturday will also feature a blast of fireworks to salute America's Independence. Call for tickets at (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.

BEAR CLAWS - Before the ballgame, utilityman Frank Curreri was promoted to Triple-A Tucson. - With Reid Mahon's promotion on Wednesday, BayBears reliever Abe Woody was tagged to take Mahon's place on the Southern League All-Star team. - Brandon Burgess returned from the disabled list on Thursday and grounded out in his first plate appearance since May 16 when he had his left ring finger broken by a thrown ball.
